W. Frederick McLaughlin, 64, of Keokuk, IA, died Sunday, July 29, 2007 at the Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, IA.
He was born on December 28, 1942 in Pittsfield, IL, the son of Wayne L. and Ester Mae Hogge McLaughlin. Fred was united in marriage to Bonita Lee Dodd on May 21, 1966 in Quincy, IL. She survives.
Other survivors include his sons, Marc Frederick McLaughlin and his wife Jennifer of Burlington, IA and Michael Lee McLaughlin and his wife Teresa of Little Rock, AR, four grandchildren, Samuel Gage McLaughlin, Brett Ashley McLaughlin, Marley Nicole McLaughlin and Cullen Riley McLaughlin, his father, Wayne L. McLaughlin of Quincy, IL, two brothers, Rick McLaughlin of Naperville, IL and Michael McLaughlin of Quincy, IL,
He was preceded in death by his mother on November 8, 2006.
Fred was a veteran of the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Vietnam Conflict.
He graduated from Quincy High School in Quincy, IL and attended Northwest Teachers College in Kirksville, MO and Culver Stockton College in Canton, MO, majoring in business. He worked in management with S.S. Kresege, J.C. Penney and State Street Store before joining the family business, McLaughlin True Value/Automotive in Quincy and Keokuk, where he worked for twenty-three years. He continued to work in automotive sales and advertising until his illness.
Fred had served as the Mayor of Keokuk from 1988-1989. He also served as a Councilman on the Keokuk City Council for several years.
Fred was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Keokuk, IA. He was also a member of the Herman Masonic Lodge, the Dey Consistory, the Ansar Shrine and Kaaba Shrine. He had served as past president for the Keokuk Fez, the Keokuk Lions Club, the Keokuk Kiwanis and the Keokuk Jaycees. He was a member of the Downtown Merchants Association, the Keokuk Chamber of Commerce, the Ambassador Club, the Eagle Scouts and the American Legion Post #41.
Fred was genuinely interested in people and never met a stranger. When greeting people he always extended his hand with a mint. He enjoyed playing golf and renovating houses.
A Memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Pastor Dave Herron officiating. Burial with military rites was at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Quincy Memorial Park in Quincy, IL
