Verlan E. McClain, 78, of Keokuk, IA, died Saturday January 20, 2007 at the River Hills Village in Keokuk, IA. He was born on October 19, 1928 in Williamstown, MO, the son of Arthur and Margaret Timmons McClain. On July 3, 1954, Verlan was united in marriage to Phyllis Hamilton Schock. She preceded him in death on December 31, 2005. Verlan was a veteran of the United States Army and served during the Korean Conflict. He had been employed for Standard Oil Company for 40 years. He then bought the Bulk Plant which became McClain Oil Company until it was sold in 1994. He was a member of the St. Paul United Church of Christ in Keokuk, IA. Verlan was a Past Master of Monroe City Lodge #64 A.F. & A.M. and a Past Worthy Patron of Monroe City Lodge #390 Eastern Star. He enjoyed traveling and carpentry work. Verlan was a good friend to all and was always willing to take care of others whenever the need arose. He is survived by one stepson, Craig Schock of Keokuk, IA, one step-granddaughter, Pamela Septer and her husband Don of Ft. Madison, IA, one step-grandson Dustin Schock of Keokuk, IA, and two brothers, Robert McClain of Quincy, IL and Nolan McClain of Peroia, IL. He was also preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Helen Nye. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Wednesday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Reverend John Tyler officiating. Burial was in the Keokuk National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Lee County Hospice.
