Obituary

Thomas Harold Ferguson, 76 of Keokuk, IA died Monday, December 14, 2020 at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City, IA. He was born February 28, 1944 in LaHarpe, IL the son of William Henry and Ollie LaVenia Duncan Ferguson. Thomas graduated from Union High in Biggsville, IL with the Class of 1962. While in high school, he was involved in the football squad, track, basketball team. He joined the United States Marine Corps and proudly served his country from 1962-1965, during the Vietnam War. On June 19, 1965 he was united in marriage to Esther West at First Christian Church in Keokuk. She survives. Other survivors include one daughter, Tamara Claussen and her husband Duane of Ankeny, IA, one son, Timothy Ferguson of Keokuk, two grandchildren, Andrew Rusher of Ankeny, IA and Cameron Ferguson of Muscatine, IA, two step-grandchildren, Colton McGee Claussen of Ankeny, IA and Heather Dixon. He is also survived by brothers and sisters, Gary Ferguson and his wife Irene, Janice Hamm, R. Eugene "Gene" (Sharon) Ferguson and Cheryl Boughton all of California and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, Walter and Lena (Hood) Ferguson and Della (Cox) Duncan, one brother, Gail L. Ferguson, and several aunts, Doris Duncan, Barbara Lawyer Sandra Wickham and Esta Ferguson, and uncle Lawrence Lawyer. He had been employed by J.I. Case Company in Burlington, IA, the Stronghurst Lumber Company in Stronghurst, IL, Keokuk Steel Castings, Hawley Heating and Cooling Company and the Keokuk National Cemetery all in Keokuk, IA. Thomas was very involved in his children's activities while they were growing up. He was the assistant scoutmaster for a troop in Stronghurst, IL, acted as the assistant baseball coach for the YMCA for his son's team and was the head baseball coach for the Torrence's Cub Scout program. He also enjoyed playing and coaching the Steel Castings baseball team in the Industrial baseball League and bowling in the Industrial Bowling League. Thomas loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing. A graveside service with military rites will be held at a later date in the Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk, IA.
