Stewart Wayne Phillips, 89, of Keokuk, IA, died Saturday, June 11, 2011 at the Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, IA. He was born on October 22, 1921 in Luray, MO, the son of Reta Edward and Margaret Johnson Phillips. On June 21, 1942, Stewart was united in marriage to Dorothy Kator in Kahoka, MO. She preceded him in death on June 24, 2008. He attended schools in Ashton and Luray, MO. Stewart began a pick-up laundry service in Keokuk in 1947. In 1948, he started the first Laundromat in Keokuk on South 4th Street known as the Rent-a-Wash Laundromat. In 1950 he opened Central Laundry and Cleaners at 1013 Concert Street in Keokuk. He started the Norge Cleaning Village Laundromat at 1120 Johnson Street in 1958. Stewart sold the Laundromat in 1981. He then worked in the maintenance department at the Lee County Care Facility in Keokuk from 1981 – 1986. Stewart was a member of the First Christian Church of Keokuk, IA. He was a former member of the Keokuk Jaycee's and the Keokuk Lion's Club. He is survived by one son, Terry Phillips and his wife Chelsea of Morton, IL, two grandchildren, Andrew and Katie Phillips of Morton, IL, one sister, Eileen Shephard of Wichita KS, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Edna Bowers and Maxine Cassity. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at the First Christian Church in Keokuk, IA with Reverend Bill Mitchell officiating. Burial was in the Frazee Cemetery in rural Alexandria, MO. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Keokuk, IA.
