Obituary

Stephen "Tony" Anthony Schmitt, 61, of Keokuk, IA, died Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at the Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, IA. He was born on May 24, 1952 in Keokuk, Iowa the son of Truman and Thelma Juanita Durham Schmitt. On March 3, 1978 Stephen was united in marriage to Judy Ann Shinn in Keokuk, IA. She survives. Other survivors include one son, Brandon Lee (Amanda) Schmitt of Keokuk, three grandchildren, Alexandra Krystyne (Kyle) Brothers of Farmerville, LA, Kyle Christopher Schmitt and Cory Lea Schmitt both of Keokuk, one sister, Francie (Roger) Daniels of Kahoka, MO and one brother, Robert (Virginia) Clark of Warsaw, IL and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Johnnie Clark and Carl Schmitt, two sisters, Peggy Zick-Hall and Patty Stark and his dog, Amos, who was his buddy and faithful companion. He graduated from Keokuk High School with the Class of 1970. He was a veteran of the United States Army and proudly served his country in the Signal Corp. Tony had been employed at Henniges in Keokuk for thirty-eight years and was a member of the United Steelworkers Local 444. He was of the Christian Faith. Tony enjoyed bowling for many years and doing yard work with his wife Judy. Tony was a family man and took great pride in his son and his grandchildren. His most treasured times were those spent at home surrounded by his family. He was devoted to his wife, Judy, the love of his life. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m., Monday, February 10, 2014 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Reverend Matt Hunt officiating. Burial with military rites was in the Keokuk National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Legion Post #41 in Keokuk.
