Stanley Herbert Smith, 89, of Keokuk, IA, died Friday, December 25, 2015 at the home of his daughter in Keokuk.
Stanley was born on November 19, 1926 in Keokuk, IA, the son of James and Zella Harmon Smith. Quitting high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served as a tail gunner during the Second World War. Active in the naval boxing program he became the Mid-weight Boxing Champion on his ship.
On July 28, 1955, Stanley was united in marriage to Peggy Ann Gilman in Las Vegas, NV. Admirably, this year marked sixty years. Peggy survives.
Other survivors include one son, Mark Lavino (Phyllis) of Colona, IL; four daughters, Teresa Lynn Leach (Robert) of Greybull, WY, Kimberley Sue Talcott of Keokuk, IA, Pamela June Smith (Gary Moore) of Oskaloosa, IA and Gloris Adele Young (Dave) of Peoria, IL; seventeen grandchildren, thirty-two great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Stanley Charles Everett Smith, two brothers, Charles and Everett Smith and four sisters, Dorothy Wilkens, Izola Turnbull, Audra Bechinski and Gloris Rough.
Stanley was an award-winning salesman at the Park Hill Cemetery in Bloomington, IL and enjoyed golfing until suffering a massive stroke in 1989. Afterwards, he loved music and collecting and organizing family pictures and received great joy reminiscing while looking at them with others.
He was a devoted husband, dad, grandpa, uncle and cousin who leaves for his family a lifetime of wonderful memories and a legacy of love.
A graveside service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 9th at the Frazee cemetery in Clark County, MO; approximately 20 minutes outside of Keokuk on US 61 S on the left; before Running Fox elementary school.
