View Video Tribute Shirley M. McManis, 79, of Keokuk, IA, died Saturday, October 29 at home. She was born on May 14, 1926 in Keokuk, IA, the daughter of Lewis E. and Lena R. Green Lowrey. On May 22, 1945, Shirley was united in marriage to Kenneth James McManis in Iowa City, IA. He survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Gail Ralya and her husband Lee of Springfield, MO, Cyndi Mason and her husband Frank of Keokuk, IA, two sons, Mark McManis and his wife Liz of Lone Tree, CO, and David McManis and his fiancé Connie of Burlington, IA, twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents. Shirley graduated from Keokuk High School with the Class of 1944. She graduated from the University of Iowa School of Nursing in 1947 with an Associate Degree in Nursing. She had been employed as a Registered Nurse at the St. Joseph Hospital and the Graham Hospital in Keokuk, IA, the Visiting Nurse Association and the Keokuk Area Hospital Home Health Care. She retired in 1991. Shirley was recognized for her many years of service to the Hospital and the KAH Grant Committee for nursing and medical professions. She was a member of the St. Paul United Church of Christ where she served on many committees through the years and was an Elder of the church. She was the first woman to be chosen to serve as an Elder at St. Paul's. Shirley was very active in many community organizations. She was a member of the Friendship Circle of Kings Daughters, was a past Service Chairman for the S.E. Iowa Chapter of the American Cancer society and was Co- chairman of the Road to Recovery program. She had been a volunteer for the S.E. Iowa Bloodmobile, the KAH Auxiliary, the Crippled Children's Clinics, the Lions Eye Screening and Dress a Doll. She had received several blue ribbons in the Dress a Doll Contests. Shirley enjoyed sewing, rebating, traveling and tending her flowers in her garden. She was a loving wife and mother and cherished the times she spent with her family. Funeral serviceswere held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, November 1, at the St. Paul United Church of Christ in Keokuk, IA with Reverend John Tyler and Reverend Jean Tyler officiating. Burial was in the Keokuk National Cemetery. Memorials were established for the American Cancer Societyand the St. Paul United Church of Christ.
