Obituary

Shirley Ann Felgar, 78, of Keokuk, IA, died Thursday, March 7, 2013 at the Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, IA. She was born on December 20, 1934 in Keokuk, the daughter of William and Velma Frakes Hanks. On January 24, 1954, Shirley was united in marriage to Gary Felgar in Keokuk. He survives. Other survivors include one son, William Felgar and his wife Deborah of Keokuk, one daughter, Kimberlee Harper of Olathe, KS, five grandchildren, Jeffrey Felgar, Brian Clark and his wife Kayla, Thomas Felgar, Andrew Harper and Matthew Harper, two great-grandchildren, Braedyn Clark and Kinley Clark and one brother, Jerry Hanks and his wife Bonnie of Keokuk. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, William and Robert Hanks. Shirley graduated from Keokuk High School with the Class of 1953. She received her nursing degree from Southeastern Community College in Keokuk. She was a member of the Keokuk Church of the Nazarene where she served on the Board and was the Sunday School secretary for twenty five years. She was also a member of the Nurses Association. She was first employed as an L.P.N. at River Hills on Plank Road in Keokuk. She then worked at Montrose Health Center as an R.N. for twenty three years, retiring in 1998. Shirley enjoyed working crossword puzzles and reading mystery novels. She also enjoyed collecting Dickens Christmas Village pieces and created a magical village every Christmas season. She and her husband loved to travel throughout the United States and had also traveled to Austria and Germany. Shirley also went on mission trips to Haiti and used her nursing skills to help the Haitian people. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 11th, 2013 at the Keokuk Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Dana Jurgens officiating. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk. Memorials may be made to the Keokuk Church of the Nazarene or the Alzheimer's Association.
