View Video Tribute Shay Vandersall, 71, of Keokuk, IA, died Wednesday, January 12, 2011 surrounded by her family at the Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, IA. She was born on May 6, 1939 in Cincinnati, OH, the daughter of Louis F. and Vera Lusk Baker. On June 11, 1960 she was united in marriage to William E. Vandersall in Akron, OH. He survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Anne L. Bohnenkamp and her husband Neal of Cedar Rapids, IA and Susan R. Anschutz and her husband Wayne of Pella, IA, one son, John B. Vandersall of Lima, OH, seven grandchildren, Rachel and Sam Bohnenkamp both of Cedar Rapids, IA, Will and Ben Anschutz both of Pella, IA, Joel, Taylor and Carter Vandersall all of Lima, OH and one sister-in-law, Carole Peterson and her husband John of Akron, OH. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Joan Bottera. Shay graduated from Kent State University with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. Shay worked as a reading teacher for the Keokuk Community School District for over 25 years. She taught at Wells Carey Elementary School, Keokuk Middle School and George Washington Elementary until she retired in 2000. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church as well as a member of the United Methodist Women and served on their education and scholarship committee. She also belonged to TTT, PEO Chapter LZ, Quester's and Alpha Phi Sorority. Shay had been a dedicated volunteer at the Keokuk Area Hospital for many years. Shay had a passion for education. She was an avid reader and she and her grandchildren enjoyed countless hours reading together. Shay found solace in her river view with her morning cup of coffee. She enjoyed playing bridge with her friends and she instilled a love of board games and card games in her family. Shay had a great appreciation of the fine arts, especially opera and music theatre. She was blessed with a very close circle of friends who were like sisters to her. Shay was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and her family was her life's greatest joy. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m., Tuesday at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Keokuk, IA with Reverend John Raab officiating. Memorials may be made to Keokuk Public School District Library Fund, The Keokuk Fine Arts Council or the Trinity United Methodist Church.
