Obituary

Ruth Haden Swisher Hendrick, 85, resident of River Hills Village in Keokuk, Iowa, died Friday, June 13, 2008. She was born on July 23, 1922 in Forest, Virginia, the third of six children, to William Curtis and Bertha Mitchell Swisher. None remain. Ruth was married to William Thurston Hendrick in Roanoke, Virginia, on November 19, 1941. They were married 55 years. He died May 14, 1996. Mrs. Hendrick is survived by three children and their spouses, Patricia and Tom Rodgers of Warsaw, Illinois, William A. and Laura Hendrick of Marietta, Georgia and Thomas T. and Blanca Hendrick of Bethesda, Maryland, six grandchildren, Ruth Ann Woolson and her husband Wesley of Warsaw, IL, Thomas A. Rodgers, Jr. of Herndon, Virginia, Rebecca Rodgers of Jackson, Wyoming, Jordan Hendrick and his wife Cindy and Stuart Hendrick of Atlanta, Georgia and William E. Hendrick of Bethesda, Maryland, two great-grandsons, Trevor and Tad Woolson of Warsaw, IL. Ruth loved her in-law family, Barbara & C.J. Witt of Roanoke, Virginia, Paul & Ann Hendrick of Vinton, Virginia, Warren & Doris Hendrick of Martinsville, Virginia, Frances Saunders of Charlottesville, Virginia, as well as her Swisher family nieces and nephews, Stephanie, Ray and Matt Riner of Evans, Georgia, the Christine Overbay family and the Curtis Whorley family of Knoxville, Tennessee, the Franklin Seymour family of Chattanooga, Tennessee and Vickey Justus of South Africa. Ruth had lived in Keokuk, IA since October of 2005, having lived most of her life in South Boston (Halifax County), Virginia and 11 years in Athens, Georgia. She had adapted well to Midwest living, making new friends, participating in the Tuesday Bible Study and in activities at River Hills Assisted Living. She was a charter member of the Chapelwood Methodist Church in Athens Georgia and attended Dan River Baptist Church in Halifax, Virginia for many years. She was ministered to in Keokuk, Iowa by the First Christian Church. Funeral services were held at 12 noon on Thursday, June 19, 2008 at the Oakey Funeral Home North Chapel in Roanoke, Virginia. Burial was in the Cedar Lawn Burial Garden in Roanoke, Virginia. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Keokuk, Iowa or her original church, Lebanon UMC Church, 2590 Matthew Talbot Rd., Forest, Virginia 24551.
