Robert Virgil "Bob" Coovert, 88, of Keokuk, died Sunday, January 25, 2015 at his home. He was born on April 1, 1926 in Keokuk, IA, the son of Virgil Franklin and Vada Kemper Coovert. On July 22, 1950 he was united in marriage to Velda A. O'Shea in Keokuk. She survives. Other survivors include, two daughters, Cindy (Dale) Sanders of Keokuk and Peggy (Phillip) Gilliland of Soddy Daisy, TN three grandsons, Chad (Jan) Sanders of Hixson, TN, Rob (Shannon) Sanders of Pella, IA and Andy (Misty) Gilliland of Soddy Daisy, TN, three granddaughters, Wendy (Kyle) Fuhrman of Woodstock, GA, Amber (Randy) Teeters of Soddy Daisy, TN and Emma (Ryan) Wroughton of Keokuk, three great-granddaughters, Ashlynn Diane Sanders, Olivia Kate Sanders, and Gabrielle Grace Sanders and two great-grandsons, Christian Matthew Sanders and Austin Louis Vastano. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Howard F. Coovert and Clarence J. Coovert and one sister, Frances A. Kimmick. Bob was a veteran of the United States Navy and proudly served his country during WW II. He had been employed at Keokuk Electro Metals/Foote Mineral as an electrician for thirty six years until his retirement in 1986. He was a faithful member of the Evangelical Free Church in Keokuk. He was also a member of the VFW Post 3508, American Legion Post #41, and The National Association of Destroyer Veterans (TIN Can Sailors). Bob was an outdoorsman at heart and enjoyed fishing, boating, hunting. He was a Harley man and enjoyed riding his bike and making memories with every mile. Bob was an avid Chicago Bears fan and enthusiastically watched their games on television. He liked to go to Hy-Vee for coffee and visit with friends. Above all else was Bob's love for his family. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather and cherished the times he spent with his family. Many memories were made on family vacations and eating out on Friday nights at the Chuckwagon. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Friday, January 30, 2015 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk with Pastor Rob Sanders officiating. Burial with military rites was in the Keokuk National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Legion Post #41.
