Robert E. "Bob" Atterberg, 72, of Niota, IL, died Friday, October 30, 2009 at his home. He was born on April 20, 1937 in Keokuk, IA the son of John and Georgia Minyard Atterberg. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and the United States Air Force and proudly served his country during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He had been employed as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service for thirty-four years, retiring in 1992. He was a member of the National Rifle Association. Robert enjoyed target shooting, riding horses, woodworking and doing mechanical work. He is survived by six sons, Kevin Atterberg and his wife Dalene of Montrose, IA, Joe Atterberg of Niota, IL, Jeff Atterberg and his wife Linda of Warsaw, IL, Buddy Hasten and his wife Tracy of Burlington, IA, Craig Hasten and his wife Nikki of St. Louis, MO and Sterling Atterberg and his wife Brandy of Carthage, IL, two daughters, Julie McVeigh and her husband Larry of Hamilton, IL and Melanie Allen and her husband Jerry of Macomb, IL, sixteen grandchildren, one great-grandchild, one brother, Bud Atterberg and his wife Helen of Keokuk and two sisters, Alberta Piercee and Carolyn Kite both of Keokuk. He was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Charles Atterberg and two sisters, Mary Mahoney and Dorothy O'Shea. Graveside services with military rites will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday at the Sandusky cemetery in Sandusky, IA with Reverend Geoff Mitchell officiating. Visitation will be held after 1 p.m., Monday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with the family meeting with friends from 6 – 8 p.m.
