View Video Tribute Robert Edwin Ashworth, 80, of Keokuk, IA, died Sunday, November 22, 2009 at his son's home in Keokuk. He was born on January 29, 1929 in Glendale, CA, the son of John Edward and Lucille E. McCabe Ashworth. He married Hilda Irene Junk and she preceded him in death in 1965. He then married Daisy Finton and she preceded him in death in 1997. Robert attended Clark County High School in Kahoka, MO and then moved to Keokuk, IA where he graduated from Keokuk High School. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. Robert was stationed on the Grand Bahama Islands during the Korean War and tracked missiles on radar. He was also stationed at Edwards Air Force Base in California. He had been employed at General Mills/Ogilvie Mills/Henkle in Keokuk for forty-five years. Robert enjoyed playing pool, horseshoes and golf. In his younger years he pitched for the industrial fast pitch softball league. He also bowled on the Men's Industrial League for over forty years. Robert loved music and dancing and was always young at heart. He was an avid euchre player and would travel far and wide to participate in euchre games. Robert also enjoyed collecting antiques. In later years as his activity level slowed, he would go for long walks enjoying the view and people he met. Robert not only loved his children, but all children. He was never too busy to shake a young person's hand and tell them what a mighty fine person they were. Spending time with his "people" was his greatest enjoyment in life. He is survived by one son, John Ashworth and his wife Barb, of Keokuk, one daughter, Dauna Johnson and her husband Don, of Sharpsburg, GA, five grandchildren, Ryan Kayvan of Orlando, FL, Tessa Johnson and Devin Johnson both of Sharpsburg, GA, Daniel Ashworth of Iowa City, IA and Nic Ashworth of Keokuk, his twin brother, Jack Ashworth of Lancaster, CA and one sister, Linda Wagoner and her husband Jim, of Brimfield, IL. He was preceded in death by one son, Robert Paul Ashworth, one grandson, Stephen Robert Ashworth and a sister-in-law, Doris Ann Ashworth. Funeral services were held at 12:00 noon Saturday, November 28, 2009 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Reverend Geoff Mitchell officiating. Burial was in the Basco Cemetery in Basco, IL. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association.
