Obituary

Richard Lee Milligan, 59, of Lansing, KS formerly of Keokuk, IA died July 1, 2009 in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. He was born April 19, 1950 in Keokuk, IA the son of Edlo P. and Myrtle Kite Milligan. He married Becky Witzenburg on March 22, 1975 in Oskaloosa, IA; they later divorced. Richard graduated from Keokuk High School with the class of 1968. Following his high school graduation he enlisted in the United States Marines and proudly served his country from 1968 – 1972. He graduated from Southeastern Community College in Keokuk, IA in 1974 with an Associate of Science Degree and received his Bachelor's Degree in Physics from Western Illinois University in Macomb, IL in 1979. He taught science at the Keokuk Senior High School from 1979 to 1980 and at Van Buren Community High School in Keosauqua, IA from 1980 to 1981. He then was employed at Chevron Chemical Company in Fort Madison, IA as a chemical lab technician and at the Defense Mapping Agency Aerospace Center in St. Louis, MO as a Physical Scientist. Most recently he had been employed with the Department of the Army Battle Command Center in Ft. Leavenworth, KS as a Research Analyst. He was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed collecting books on military medals and reading nonfiction books about war heroes. He also enjoyed going to the movies. He is survived by one daughter, Amie Milligan-Peck and her husband Jason of Fairfax, IA, one brother Charles J. Milligan of Keokuk, IA, two sisters, Carolyn ( Susie) Jenkins and her husband Rodney of Hamilton, IL, Darla K. Zumdome and her husband Jody of Montrose, IA, several nieces and nephews, Tim Milligan, Charles S. Milligan, Tammy Schroeder, Tony Milligan, Gregory Wood, Michael Wood, Clayton Jenkins, Derek Jenkins, Christina Campbell, Cindy Johnson, Breanne and Kaylee Zumdome. He was also preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Mary Milligan and one brother, Roger Milligan. Memorial services were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 8, 2009 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Brother Bill Hauser officiating. Burial with military rites was in the New Boston Cemetery, New Boston, IA. Memorials may be made to the Keokuk Public Library.
