Obituary

View Video Tribute Richard G. Bryant, 78, of Keokuk, IA, died at 5:20 p.m. on Monday, March 21, 2011 at Lake Regional Hospital in Osage Beach, MO. He was born August 3, 1932 at home in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Alfred Harold and Blanche Virginia Hatfield Bryant. On June 17, 1956 he married Barbara A. Reeves of Keokuk , IA. Survivors include his wife, four children, Rick H. Bryant of Camdenton, MO (wife Tracey), Virginia L. Bryant-Auge of Montrose, IA (husband Joseph), Barby E. Bryant of Keokuk , IA , Bobby G. Bryant of Montrose, IA, eight grandchildren, Angelynn, Dylan, Danyale, Robert, Kimberlynn, Rikilynn, Josilynn and Alfred Bryant, two great grandchildren, Katelynn and Jenniferlynn Bryant and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Leonard L. Bryant and William "Sonny" Bryant. Richard was a 1950 graduate of Montrose High School and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education, a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Chemistry and Math, and a Masters Degree in Natural Science from Northeast Missouri State Teachers College (Truman State University). He was also a graduate of the Reisch Auctioneering College. He served in the United States Army from 1953-1955. Richard was an educator for 33 years, teaching Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics for the Fort Madison Community School District retiring in 1992. He concurrently owned and operated Bryant Auction Service for 38 years in the Lee County area. He was a member of Sandusky United Methodist Church, the Masons, American Legion, National Auctioneer Association, National Rifle Association and National Education Association. He also served as the President and Vice-President of the Fort Madison Education Association, was the Grand Marshall of the Fort Madison High School Free Style Wrestling Tournaments, received an Honorary Coaching Certificate presented by the Fort Madison High School Coaching Staff and sponsored a Teacher Softball Team for several years in Fort Madison. He also conducted and donated countless hours to local benefit and charity auctions. Funeral services were held at 12 noon on Saturday March 26, 2011 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Melvin Bryant officiating. Burial was at the Montrose Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Richard G. Bryant Scholarship Fund.
