Obituary

Ray Maurice Harter, 78, of Keokuk, died Friday, September 2, 2016 at his home. He was born on January 9, 1938 in Keokuk, IA, the son of Ray and Kathryn Patterson Harter. On June 26, 1960, Ray was united in marriage to Beverly Humphrey in Keokuk. She survives. Other survivors include one daughter, Lori Seabold of Keokuk, one son, Jeffrey Harter of Jacksonville, NC, seven grandchildren, Justin Harter, Lacey (Josh) Harnish, Alyssia Caley, Adam (Kacey) Seabold, Mikaela Harter, Breanna (Andrew) Kemp and Brooklyn Seabold, Two Great-grandchildren, Gavin and Landon Harnish, one sister, Betty Frohreich of Baudette, MN, one brother-in-law, Bob Crompton of FL, several nieces and nephews including Vickie Humphrey of Palmetto, FL, his constant, faithful companion, Spanky and special neighbors, Pat and Candy Martin. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Maxine Crompton, his father-in-law, Edward Humphrey, and his mother-in-law, Wilma Sassenberg. Ray graduated from Keokuk High School and then attended Southeastern Community College to become a journeyman pipefitter. He had been employed at Roquette America in Keokuk for thirty-five years. After retiring from Roquette at age 55, he worked at Millwright Services in Keokuk until his retirement at age 72. He was an active and faithful member of the Melrose United Methodist Church in rural Argyle, IA. He also was a member of the Local 48 Grain Millers Union and served as President for ten years. He was a former board member of the Hubco Credit Union. He enjoyed tinkering around the house and garage, making repairs and working on projects. He was generous with his time and talents and was always ready to help someone at a moment's notice. He enjoyed getting together with his friends for coffee and fellowship at the 4th Street Café. Above all else was Ray's love for his family. He was a devoted husband and a loving father and grandfather. His grandchildren were his pride and joy and he loved to spend time with them. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 7, 2016 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk with Pastor Dawn Butler officiating. Memorials may be made to the Melrose United Methodist Church or the Keokuk Humane Society.
