Obituary

Ralph Andrew Cassell, 98, of Keokuk, IA died Friday, April 18, 2008 at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, IA. He was born on August 7, 1909 in Keokuk, IA, the son of Jacob P. and Anna Caroline Biddenstadt Cassell. He married Gertrude Redmon on August 2, 1933 in Keokuk, IA. He had been employed with the City of Keokuk as a firefighter for twenty seven years retiring in 1970. He was a member of the St. Paul United Church of Christ in Keokuk. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles and the Firefighters union. Ralph enjoyed working in his vegetable garden, traveling and watching baseball games. He was an avid Cardinal baseball fan. He is survived by two daughters, Catherine "Sis" Breakbill of Keokuk, IA and Thelma Cochran and her husband Richard of Warsaw, IL, one son, Ralph A. Cassell, Jr. of Tokyo, Japan, five grandchildren Cathy McCall, Scott Breakbill, Jane Cochran, Marc Cochran and Jason Cochran, thirteen great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and a special niece, Maxine Knowlton of Unionville, MO. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, LeeAnn Breakbill and Jan Breakbill, one brother, Earl Cassell and two sisters, Mildred Odell and Clara Monks. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, April 23 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Father Paul Connolly officiating. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army Canteen of Keokuk.
