Obituary

Phyllis Jean McClain, 77 of Keokuk, IA, died Saturday, December 31, 2005 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, IA. She was born August 21, 1928 in Keokuk, IA the daughter of Clarence W. and Freda Davis Hamilton. On July 3, 1954, she was united in marriage to Verlan McClain in Peoria, IL. He survives. She is also survived by one son, Craig Schock of Keokuk, IA, two grandchildren, Dustin Schock of Keokuk, IA and Pamela Septer of West Point, IA, four great-grandchildren, Briar Schock, Brieanna Septer, Dalton Septer and Kylie Septer, one brother, Jerry Hamilton and his wife Evelyn of Keokuk, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents, twin sons, Larry and Gary, at birth, one brother, Melvin Hamilton, and one sister, Marsha Joy Hamilton in infancy. Phyllis had been employed as the bookkeeper for McClain Oil Company from 1954 – 1994. She was a member of the St. Paul United Church of Christ in Keokuk, the Eastern Star and the Rainbow Girls. Phyllis loved to swim and was the first woman to swim the Mississippi river from Ft. Madison to Keokuk, IA. She shared her love for swimming by teaching over 800 students how to swim. She also liked to travel, read, crochet, knit and take care of her dogs. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, January 4 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Reverend John Tyler officiating. Burial was in the Keokuk National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the St. Paul United Church of Christ in Keokuk.
