Peggy Ann Smith, 87 of Keokuk, IA passed peacefully in her sleep Sunday, November 7, 2021 at her daughter's home in Keokuk. Peggy was born January 31, 1934 in Keokuk, IA the daughter of Harry and Ann Wareheim Gilman. On June 28, 1955 Peggy was united in marriage to Stanley H. Smith in Las Vegas, NV. He preceded her in death on December 25, 2015. Peggy served as the glue that held her family together. She cared for her paralyzed husband with humor, patience and unflinching resolve despite her own health struggles. Her connection to Stanley was evident to everyone who met them and he could not have asked for a more honorable wife in sickness and in health. She was a true matriarch whose example of love, faithfulness, and steadfastness in a storm was an inspiration to her many friends and family. Peggy was well known for her quick wit, expressive face, and contagious laughter. She was a shark at cards, a painter and gardener, an excellent cook, an avid reader and she bowled until she could no longer lift the ball. All of her varied loves and passions have been carried forward by both her children and grandchildren. Peggy is survived by one son, Mark L. Lavino (Phyllis) of South Carolina, and four daughters, Teresa Leach (Robert) of Wyoming, Kimberley Elliott (Don) of lowa, Pam Smith (Gary) of lowa and Gloris Young (David) of Nevada. She is also survived by seventeen grandchildren, thirty-seven great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. She will be sorely missed by all. Besides her husband Stanley, Peggy was also preceded in death by one infant son, Stanley Charles "Chuckie" Everett Smith, her parents, two sisters and her brother. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 25, 2022 at the First Lutheran Church in Keokuk with Pastor Rodney Underwood officiating. A luncheon will follow the service.
