Nick Markovich, 89, of Keokuk, IA, formerly of Portage, IN, died Thursday, December 9, 2010 at the Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, IA. He was born on October 10, 1921 in Gary, Indiana the son of Kristo and Angelina Marich Markovich. On September 2, 1975, Nick was united in marriage to Frances Kay Rummel McCracken in Portage, IN. She survives. Other survivors include one son, Robert McCracken and his wife Kennetha "Kenny" of Newton, IA, one daughter Debbie Miller and her husband Raymond of Keokuk, IA, nine grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, and one niece, Marlene Fisher of Gary, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. Nick was a veteran of the United States Army and proudly served his country during WW II. He had been employed at U.S. Steel in Gary, IN for forty-four years and retired in 1982. Following his retirement he worked at Dunes Acres in Chesterton, IN for twenty years. Nick was a member of the Apostolic Faith Pentecostal Church in Keokuk and the Portage United Pentecostal Church in Portage, IN. He was also a member of the United Steel Workers Union and the Rail Mill Retirees Breakfast Club. He was an avid Indiana basketball and football fan. Nick enjoyed watching western movies and spending time with his family and grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, December 13, 2010 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Reverend Alex Kloster officiating. A service in Portage, IN was held on Wednesday, December 15, 2010 with burial in the Calvary Cemetery in Portage.
