Monique Renee Savage, 57, of Homosassa, Florida, passed away Tuesday, May 4, 2026, at Tampa General Hospital, surrounded by her loved ones.
She was born November 15, 1968, in Keokuk, Iowa, to Clarence and Sandra Hoffstatter Savage. She grew up attending schools in Hamilton, Illinois, where she developed an early interest in the medical field that would shape much of her life.
Monique welcomed her first son, Nicholas Edward LaVerne, and the two traveled between Keokuk and Davenport, Iowa, before she eventually made her way to Seattle, Washington, where Nicholas stayed with her Aunt Jan while she worked to build a more stable life. She later returned to the Midwest and settled in Carthage, Illinois, where she welcomed her second son, Maxwell.
She pursued medical studies during this time and proudly earned a degree from Carthage College.
Tragedy struck when Nicholas was hit and killed by a school bus on his way to school — a heartbreak that would stay with her always. During this difficult chapter, Maurice Alexander, a man she had known in Seattle, came back into her life in Keokuk. The two were married at Emmanuel Methodist Church in Keokuk, Iowa. Though they later divorced, life continued, and Monique welcomed two more sons, Koby and Samuel, while working as a nursing aide at a local nursing home. A workplace injury eventually left her with lasting back problems that ended her nursing career.
As her parents began spending winters in Florida in retirement, Monique and her boys made visits south and fell in love with the area. In 2012, she found a wonderful home in Homosassa, Florida, and made it her own. Maxwell eventually returned to the Keokuk area, while Koby and Samuel remained with her.
For a time, Monique shared a home on the water in Hudson, Florida, with a companion, enjoying six years of coastal living. When a hurricane caused severe flooding, she and Samuel returned to her Homosassa home, where she spent her remaining years.
Monique was a kind, warm, and generous woman who touched the lives of everyone she met. She instilled in her sons a strong faith and a deep commitment to treating others with kindness. She had a genuine passion for people and for helping those around her, and she gave her heart freely to social causes she believed in. She spent many years working in home health care, continuing to serve others even after her nursing career ended. She had a creative spirit and a love for home décor and DIY projects that made every space she lived in feel like a true home. Wherever life took her — Iowa, Illinois, Washington, or Florida — she made friends and left a lasting impression.
Monique is survived by her parents, Clarence and Sandra Savage of Beverly Hills, Florida; her sister, Teresa Savage-Grimm of Woodbridge, Virginia; her aunt, Janice Hoffstatter of Seattle, Washington; her sons Maxwell of Keokuk, Iowa, Koby of Inverness, Florida, and Samuel of Homosassa, Florida; her grandsons Bleyn and Ryker of Clinton, Iowa, and Conner of Apopka, Florida; and her granddaughter Teagan of Fort Madison, Iowa, as well as many beloved cousins.
She was preceded in death by her son Nicholas and her grandparents.
