Melvin "Euger" Eugene Hayden, 78, of Keokuk, died Thursday, November 22, 2012 at his home. He was born on June 4, 1934 in Keokuk, IA, the son of Melvin and Ella Jane Newcomb Hayden. On December 30, 1963, Melvin was united in marriage to Bonnie Deitrich in Kahoka, MO. She preceded him in death on December 28, 2011. Melvin served in the United States Marines. Melvin had been employed at various construction companies. For forty years he helped manage the construction of power plants and dams. Melvin retired in 1989. He was a member of the Boys Scouts of America, the American Legion, the National Rifle Association and the Ruger Gun Club. He enjoyed woodworking, guns, hunting, including rattlesnake hunting, fishing, metal detecting and telling jokes. He also enjoyed playing the guitar and harmonica. Melvin's wife, Bonnie, was the light of his life, and after his retirement they enjoyed traveling. He is survived by one son, Bruce Hayden of Colorado, one daughter, Vickie Carter and her husband Bill of Dixon, MO, three grandchildren, Dana Overfield, Ryan Rodwell and Jason Rodwell, two great-grandchildren, two sisters, Alice Howard of Keokuk and Frances McAndrew of Kahoka, MO, one brother, William Hayden and his wife Janice of Wayland, MO and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was also preceded in death by his parents & grandparents, two sons in infancy, one brother, Joseph Hayden, three sisters, Catherine McGhghy, Mary Lou Ames and Jane Ann Lawson. According to his wishes, there will be no service or visitation. Memorials may be made to the Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.
