Mathew Wayne Land, 64, passed away on October 27, 2026, at 6:58 p.m. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, charitable spirit, and enduring faith in human decency.

Mathew served in the United States Air Force and received an honorable discharge. Throughout his working life, he was an over-the-road truck driver and worked at Steel Castings in Keokuk, Iowa, and Cargill in Ottumwa, Iowa.

Mathew loved working with his hands and exploring different crafts, including wood burning, glass etching, and restoring old furniture. He had a deep appreciation for nature and enjoyed fishing, arrowhead hunting, gardening, and foraging for wild berries and mushrooms. He found pleasure in cooking for his family, trying different cooking techniques, and preserving what he grew and gathered into meals, jams, and jellies. He also enjoyed exploring different kinds of music.

Above all, Mathew loved spending time with his family, grandchildren, and friends. His humor and generosity touched those around him. He believed in saying “I love you” before leaving or ending a phone call, because you never knew whether it would be the last time you spoke. That simple habit leaves his family with a lasting reminder of his love.

Mathew is survived by his son, Michael Wayne Land; his daughter, Brianna Nichole Lynn Wadena, and her husband, Marc Wadena Jr.; his grandchildren, Addison Land, Olivia Land, Jackson Blaise, Greyson O’Rion DeAngelos Shepard, and Mal’akye Jerome Robinson,Hayden Alexander DeFrance Shepard ; and his brother, Mark Land.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Martha Janette Roberts; his grandfather, Jesse Edward Land Sr.; his grandson, Da’Markiss Steven Wayne Wadena; and many aunts and uncles.

Family and friends will gather to remember Mathew on November 9, 2026, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Vigen Memorial Home, 1328 Concert St., Keokuk, Iowa 52632. Graveside services will be held the following day, November 10, 2026, at 1 p.m. at Oakland Cemetery.
