Mary Virginia Rankin, 83 of Kahoka died Sunday, October 23, 2016 at the Great River Medical Center in Burlington, Iowa. She was born June 2, 1933 in Keokuk, Iowa the daughter of Gordon and Minnie Dennis Wallace. Since the age of four she was raised by her step mother Ethel Belle Nye. On September 21, 1957, she was united in marriage to Robert John Rankin in Canton. MO. He preceded her in death on April 25, 2006. She graduated from Argyle High School with the Class of 1951. Virginia was employed with Irvin Phillips and then retired from Metzlers in 1996 after 30 years of employment. She was a member of Local 444 United Steel Workers. She enjoyed horseback riding, crocheting and doing cross word puzzles. Virginia was a seasoned cake decorator and made hundreds of wedding and birthday cakes. She enjoyed volunteering at head start and making treats for the class. Of a morning she'd enjoy a cup of coffee and watch the humming birds. Most of all she loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them. She is survived by a her four legged companions, Chivas and Isis, daughter, Dorothy Brooks of Kahoka; three sons Bill Rankin, Robert Rankin Jr. and his wife Lu, and Roy Rankin and his wife Janie all of Kahoka; seven grandchildren, Shauna Whitaker and her husband Dan, John P. Brooks, Billy Rankin and his wife Stephanie, Joshua Noble, Matthew Rankin and his wife Clarissa, Tabatha Moore, and Terry Brownlee; several great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, step mother, a son, John Rankin, and a great grandson, Hunter John Rankin and a brother Jack Wallace. Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Friday, October 28, 2016 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Kahoka with Brother Bill Hauser officiating. Burial was in the Bluff Springs Cemetery in rural Canton.
