Obituary

Martha Heavin, 83, of Keokuk, IA died Saturday, July 30, 2016 at the Keokuk Area Hospital. She was born November 13, 1932 in Farmington, IA the daughter of Rex & Eva Ponte Kelley. On June 1, 1952 she was united in marriage to Stanley Brombaugh in West Des Moines, IA. He preceded her in death on April 1, 1968. She then married Walter Heavin on October 3, 1969 in Keokuk. He preceded her in death on November 17, 1992. Martha graduated from Harmony High School in Farmington, IA with the Class of 1950. Martha was the main caregiver for her mother until her death in 1968. In her younger years she had been employed by the Army Ammunition Plant. She had been employed by the Keokuk Convalescent Center in Keokuk for eighteen years until her retirement in 1990 as a CNA/Therapist. Martha was a member of New Testament Church in Keokuk. After moving to Deer Meadow Apartments she was an active member of their resident council where she served as treasurer. She enjoyed time spent with her family and holidays and her Deer Meadow neighbors playing games, sharing dinners, birthdays and holiday events. She also enjoyed watching the birds, squirrels and sometimes even deer visiting the feeders outside her living room window. She especially loved watching the hummingbirds and her flowers blooming. Martha was a loving mother and grandmother and cherished the times she spent with her family. Martha is survived by her three children, Carolyn Hibbard of Hamilton, IL, Theresa (Rick) Allen of Keokuk and Tina Brombaugh of Carthage, IL, three step-children, Diane (Carl) Whitaker of Revere, MO, Bill ( Kathy) Heavin of Salem, MO and Phyllis (Don) Sherril of Rolla, MO, fourteen grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Christina ("Tinie") Hufford, Frances Daniels, two brothers, Ivan and Dale Kelley, one nephew, Russell Kelley whom she thought of very highly, and one step-daughter, Linda Schnyder. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m., Friday, August 5, 2016 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk with Brother Bill Hauser officiating. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk. Memorials may be made to the New Testament Church.
