Obituary

Mark Kevin Meinhardt, 62, of Keokuk, IA, died Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, IA. He was born on March 21, 1951 at St. Joseph Hospital in Keokuk, IA, the son of Herbert and LaVonne J. Huston Meinhardt. He graduated from Keokuk High School with the Class of 1969. Mark was a Veteran of the United States Air Force. On June 22, 1996, Mark was united in marriage to Nancy French. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Clint Harness and his wife Carrie of Neenah, WI, and Jeff Harness and his wife Heidi of Basco, IL, three grandchildren, Andrew, Adam and Amelia Harness and one future grandchild, Baby Boy Harness, one brother, Doug Meinhardt of Alabama two sisters in law, Carla French of Keokuk and Pam Baxter and her husband Charlie of Keokuk, and many other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Gary Meinhardt. Mark had been employed with Brendle Trucking for eighteen years as an over-the-road semi driver. He then worked at Iowa Prison Industries for fourteen years, retiring in 2008. He was a member of the St. John's Episcopal Church in Keokuk. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association, the Montrose Gun Club and served on the Lee County Gaming Board. He had been a volunteer at the Alternative School in Keokuk where he touched the lives of many students as a tutor and mentor. Mark was an avid fan of the Florida Gators and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He enjoyed target shooting at the Gun Club and riding his Harley Davison. He looked forward to summers when he and Nancy took motorcycle trips with his friends. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren who lovingly called him "Papa Cycle". Mark was a very outgoing person and had a great sense of humor. He had a gift of never meeting a stranger. Graveside services with military rites were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 25th 2014 at the Keokuk National Cemetery with Father Larry Snyder officiating. Memorials may be made to the Great River Hospice House or the American Cancer Society.
