Mark Matlock, 65, of Montrose, passed away Saturday, August 29, 2026, at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City, Iowa.
Mark was born March 17, 1961, in Sacramento, California, the son of Gordon and Marjorie Priest Matlock. He graduated from Central Lee High School and, following graduation, proudly enlisted in the United States Army. While serving his country, Mark was stationed in Korea, where he served as a Military Police officer. After being honorably discharged, he returned home and worked as a prison guard. He later spent many years as an over-the-road truck driver before eventually driving locally.
Mark was happiest outdoors, especially with a fishing pole or shotgun in hand. He loved spending time on the water and especially enjoyed trout fishing trips to northern Iowa. He also looked forward to duck hunting in Arkansas. Mark was a man of faith. Whether he was fishing, boating, hunting, or simply enjoying the outdoors, those were the places where he felt most at home.
Mark was known for his quick wit, wild spirit, and ability to keep those around him laughing. He loved his family fiercely and lived life on his own terms, leaving behind more than a few stories that will undoubtedly be told for years to come.
Mark was formerly married to Wendy Ryland, with whom he shared his children. He is survived by his two sons, Jeremy Matlock (Shy) of Keokuk and Jeffrey Matlock of Keokuk; one daughter, Kayla Clark of Keokuk; his grandchildren, Ethan Matlock, Tait Matlock, Paisley Matlock, Rylee Matlock, Avery Matlock, Zander Matlock, Chloe Durham, Tucker Roberts, Andrew Clark, Vada Clark and Jared Wrieden; two brothers, Kirk Matlock of Salem and Scott Matlock (Vicky) of Donnellson; one sister, Holli Johnson (Joe) of Montrose; along with many nieces, nephews and other family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Jared Matlock; and one brother, Todd Matlock.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 4, at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk. Burial with military rites will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton.
Visitation will be held from 5–7 p.m. Thursday, September 3, at the funeral home, with the family meeting with friends during that time.
