Marcus L. Varner, 80 of Keokuk, IA died Monday, October 15, 2012 at the Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, IA. He was born on March 7, 1932 in Keokuk, IA the son of Elmer and Ethel Long Varner. On January 18, 1953 he was united in marriage to Dorothy Darlene Lander in Hamilton, IL. His children are one daughter, Cathy Fox and her husband Jack of Braselton, GA, two sons, Steve Varner and his wife Vicki of Davenport, IA and Dave Varner of St. Louis, MO. He especially enjoyed his time spent with his seven grandchildren, Ben Varner and his wife Kelly of Wheaton, IL, Nick Fox and his wife Lauren of Portland, ME, Keith Varner of Ankeny, IA, Kelsey Fox of Atlanta, GA, Michael Fox of Annapolis, MD, Travis Varner of San Francisco, CA and Chloe Varner Harris and her husband Chris of Omaha, NE and four great-grandchildren, Zuriah, Anna, Elias and Jonas Varner of Wheaton, IL,one brother, Paul Varner of Moline, IL and two sisters, Eunice Acker and her husband Lyle of Quincy, IL and Lois Wilson and her husband Harold of Wayland, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Albert Varner, Clarence Varner, Emmanuel Varner, David Varner and John Varner and one sister, Mildred Amon. Marcus was a veteran of the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict. He had been employed at Hubinger's in Keokuk for forty-six years, retiring in 1994. Marcus enjoyed having coffee at Hy-Vee every morning and going to auctions. He always had a project of some sort to work on and especially liked to tinker with tractors, cars and boats. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Friday, October 19,2012 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA. Burial with military rites was in the Keokuk National Cemetery. He was a friend to many and will be greatly missed by all.
