Obituary

Lowell Edwin Coker, 73, of Keokuk, IA, died Monday morning, January 15, 2007 at his home. He was born July 31, 1933 in Patterson, IL, the son of Brock Mayfield and Olive Naomi Ford Coker. He married Carol Ann Wilcox of rural Roodhouse, IL on July 22, 1956. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served during the Korean Conflict. Dr. Coker graduated from Roodhouse High School with the Class of 1951 and from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL with a PhD in biochemistry and microbiology. His career was in the corn wet milling industry, working for Staley Company in Decatur, IL and Hubingers/Roquette America in Keokuk, IA, retiring in 1997. He served as chairman of the Keokuk Airport Commission for ten years and was a member of the Keokuk Rotary Club. Lowell's faith in Jesus was central to his life. He was an active member of the Keokuk Evangelical Free Church and served in many capacities including chairman, deacon, teacher and vocalist. His family was of utmost importance to him and his love for all of them was unconditional. His many hobbies, including spinning, weaving, woodworking, chip carving and woodburning kept him busy in retirement. His most recent accomplishment was the completion of a book on creation. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carol of Keokuk, IA, his daughter Susan Gunnink and her husband Brian of Clive, IA, one grandson, Ezekiel David Gunnink two granddaughters, Sophia Claire and Lillian Jane Gunnink, one brother, Raymond Coker and his wife Mary Lou of Bloomington, IL and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Richard Alan Coker in 1993 and David Michael Coker in 1989 and one brother Harold Coker in 1986. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday at the Evangelical Free Church in Keokuk, IA with Pastor Craig Burton officiating. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk, IA. Memorials may be made to the Keokuk Evangelical Free Church Building Fund.
