Obituary

Lola J. Brown, 85 of Montrose, IA, died Monday, April 10, 2017 at the Ft. Madison Community Hospital in Ft. Madison, IA. She was born on August 26, 1931 in Fairbault, MN, the daughter of William and Joy Shepard Wulf. She graduated from Keokuk High School with the Class of 1949. On November 26, 1950, Lola was united in marriage to Larry Brown in Keokuk. She is survived by her husband, Larry of Montrose, one son, Gordon Brown and wife Linda of Montrose, IA, two daughters, Diane Grossman and husband Dennis of Farmington, IA and Carla Varnold and husband Curtis of Parker, CO, five grandchildren, Denise Evans and husband Jason, Dawn Conklin and husband Eric, Dana Huling and husband Justin, Joshua Varnold and wife Jillian and Nathan Varnold, two step-grandchildren, Craig Carter and Rebekah Carter, eight great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Ronald Brown and one sister, Marian Almendinger. Lola was a member of the United Methodist Church in Montrose. She was also a member of the Kings Daughters and the Red Hat Society and served on the Montrose Library Board and the Election Board for many years. She enjoyed bowling, playing card games, working crossword puzzles and reading. She was a skilled seamstress, and also made knitted and crocheted projects for her family and friends. She was a wonderful cook and made a delicious pot of ham and bean soup. Everyone looked forward to her Christmas cookies, raisin bread and cinnamon rolls. Lola enjoyed being a homemaker and farmer's wife and spent her life making a wonderful home for her husband and children. Memorial services were held at 11 a.m., Friday, April 14, 2017 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk with Reverend Goldie Laymon officiating. Private burial was in the Montrose Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Montrose Methodist Church or the Montrose Library.
