D. "Lee" Kane, 82, of Keokuk, IA died Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at the Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL. She was born September 12, 1930 in Keokuk, IA the daughter of Ollie and Nyra Hilleary Thurman. She was united in marriage to Tim Kane. He preceded her in death on July 7, 1999. Lee graduated from Keokuk High School and then attended Southeastern Community College. In her younger years she was employed at Mundt Piano & Organ Company in Keokuk. She became a realtor for Byram Real Estate in Keokuk, was employed as the Director of Information and Referral Services in Keokuk and for the Iowa Department of Social Services, IMC. She was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Keokuk where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school and Bible School. Lee was very active in the community and volunteered with many civic associations and board. She served as City Chairperson for the Cancer Drive, Chairperson for Measles Clinics and Diabetic Clinics from Des Moines, IA, Chairperson for the Iowa City Mobile Children's General Clinic for sixteen years, past President of Washington Central PTA, past President for the City Council PTA, volunteered at the Red Cross Blood Mobile, was the founder of City Block Mother's Program and founder of Immunization Clinics before Public Health took it over, past member of the Toastmistress Organization and Community Betterment, board member and site selection chairperson for Habitat for Humanity in Keokuk, a fifty year member of the Keokuk Yacht Club and Yacht Club First Mates, served as Treasurer for Rollin on the River, financial Advisor of Pow-Wow, served on the Keokuk Art Center board , Vice Chairperson of the Salvation Army Advisory Board and a volunteer for Friends of Keokuk Animal Services (FOKAS). Lee was active with the Keokuk Area Hospital Auxiliary and received the honor of Auxilian of the Year in 2009. She was very involved in the Kardiac Kapers productions and the KAH Tea & Bazaar where she served as Chairperson in 2009 and co-chairperson in 2013. Lee loved to bowl and play pool and was on several leagues. She enjoyed music, especially trumpet and organ. She loved to entertain at the Fountain Supper Club, the Gold Nugget and the Gypsy Dell with her organ music. She is survived by one daughter, Mitzi Kane of Racine, WS, four step-daughters, Diana Fenton and her husband Mike of Hamilton, IL, Tammy Burt of Oxnard, CA, Margie White of Reno, NV and Chyril Fleming of San Diego, CA, two step-sons, Tim Kane of Auburn, CA and Steve Kane of Gig Harbor, WA, one granddaughter, Rachel Kane Ratcliff, sixteen step-grandchildren, Sheri (Kris)Taylor, Troy Fenton, Bret Burt, Cherish (Lance) Rogers, Lori LePell, Timothy Kane, Jen Long, Tao Kane, Lea Kane, Chris Kane, Shawn Kane, Dillon Kane, Charlie (Roseanne) Indie, Christy Indie, Cathy Lima and Ronnie Ledferd, numerous step-great and step-great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and cousins, Laura Morgan Mesner of Keokuk who was thought of as a daughter, Uncle Lou Wright of Carthage, IL, and her companion, George Hoffman of Peoria, AZ. She was also preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Muriel O. Tebbs. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Monday, July 15, 2013 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Pastor Mike Shea officiating. Burial was in the Keokuk National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Friends of Keokuk Animal Shelter (FOKAS), Rand Park Flower Garden for a bench, Keokuk Art Center or Habitat for Humanity.
