Larry E. Horner, 73, of Montrose, IA, died Saturday, March 16, 2013 at his home. He was born on May 9, 1939 in Keokuk, IA, the son of Kenneth and Almeda Thrush Horner. On September 17, 1958, Larry was united in marriage to Bonnie Krome in Quincy, IL. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Corky Nye and husband Tony of Keokuk, Cynthia Smith and husband Gene of Mt. Prospect, IL, four sons, Doug Horner and wife Dinette of Keokuk, James Horner and wife Beth of Montrose, Joe Horner and wife Tracy of Ft. Madison and Scott Mead of Asheville, NC, twenty-two grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, three sisters, Sandra Pope and husband Dan of White Cloud, MI, Nancy Hoeferle and husband Harold of Normal, IL and Suann Guthardt and husband Wendall of Bettendorf, IA, one brother, Kenny Horner and wife Pam of Keokuk, a sister-in-law, Betty Hageman and husband Foriste of St. Patrick, MO and an honorary brother, Frank Oertel and his wife Bev of Peaksville, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, John Horner, one grandson, Briar Horner and one great-grandson, Gunther Ames. Larry graduated from Keokuk High School with the Class of 1957. He was first employed with Mechling Barge Lines. He then went to work for Sheller Globe in Keokuk where he retired in 1999 as supervisor after 40 years of service. Larry's faith was an active and vital part of his life. He was called to the ministry and founded the Freedom of Christ Christian Center in Keokuk where he served as a Pastor. He loved being outdoors hunting, fishing and running his dogs. He was a member of the Coon Hunter Club and several other Hunting Clubs. He also raised horses and mules. Larry was a collector of all things and was always on the lookout for unique stuff to add to his collections. He was a connoisseur of good food and enjoyed sitting down to a home cooked meal. There was nothing more treasured in Larry's life than his family. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who leaves for his family a lifetime of wonderful memories. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 20th, 2013 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Pastor Ray Gilbert officiating. Burial was in the Oakland Sand Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Freedom in Christ Christian Center.
