Kenneth "Ken" James McManis, 91, of Keokuk, IA, died Friday, April 28, 2017 at his home.
He was born on January 28, 1926 in Keokuk, IA, the son of Lee R. and Adelle Barbara Lowenstein McManis. On May 22, 1945, Ken was united in marriage to Shirley May Lowrey in Iowa City, IA. She preceded him in death on October 29, 2005. He married Mary Heslop Lucas on November 24, 2006 in Keokuk, IA. She survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Gail Ralya and husband Lee of Springfield, MO and Cyndi Mason & husband Frank of Keokuk, two sons, David McManis and wife Connie of Burlington, IA and Mark McManis and wife Liz of Frisco, CO, two step-sons, Jeff Lucas and wife Christina of Chicago, IL and Scott Lucas of Denver, CO, two step-daughters, Susan Bergstrom and husband Rob of Ft. Madison, IA and Jennifer Noel and husband Kirk of Granger, IA, fourteen grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Doris Camden, three brothers, Chester McManis in infancy, Donald McManis and Orion McManis.
Ken graduated from Keokuk Senior High with the Class of 1944.
He was a veteran of the United States Army and proudly served his country during World War II.
Ken was the owner/operator of McManis Contractors in Keokuk. He began his career in construction by serving a four year apprenticeship with his father. From 1950 until his retirement in 1979, Ken built many homes in Keokuk.
He was an active member of the St. Paul United Church of Christ where he taught Sunday School and served as an Elder. He also made sure that things around the church were fixed and kept in tip-top shape. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #41.
Ken enjoyed gardening and growing tomatoes, traveling, cooking and personal investment. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends. His grandchildren were his pride and joy and he was very active in their lives.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at the St. Paul United Church of Christ in Keokuk with Reverend Milo Van Veldhuizen officiating. Burial with military rites was in the Keokuk National Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the St. Paul United Church of Christ or the Lee County Hospice.
