View Video Tribute On Saturday, August 27, 2011 Kenneth E. Merschbrock "Iron Wolf" passed to the other side to be with his creator, after over five years of courageous battle with cancer. November 9, 1939 in Franklin, IA he was born to Albert Butch and Sylvia Irene Bernhardt Merschbrock. At age 5 Kenny helped his Grandpa plant 3000 sweet potato plants a day because Grandpa had a bad heart. When he was eleven years old he worked for Joe Shepard and Eddie Holtkamp. The wages he earned were given to his parents to help feed their family. He worked for Lee County IA and then went to work for Keokuk Steel Castings for forty-two years and seven months. Kenny was united in marriage to Mary Ellene Kite on November 9, 1957. She passed away June 12, 1993. He then married Judy Glasford on August 6, 1994. She survives. He was a good, proud and loving father of Raymond Merschbrock of Overland Park, Kansas, Kenny Merschbrock and his wife Christi of Olatha, Kansas, Mary Beth Case and her husband Gale of Keokuk, IA, Billy C. Newberry and his wife Brenda of Wyaconda, MO, Laurie Miller and her companion Neal Kinzler of Wayland, IA, eight grandchildren and many very special friends that were regarded as his children and grandchildren. Sisters Doloris Hall and her husband Bill of Ft. Madison, IA, Rosetta Brady of Chariton, IA and Gloria Merschbrock of Montrose, IA and one brother Larry Merschbrock and an adopted native brother, Larry Cooper and his wife June and their family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, his parents, grandparents and two granddaughters. Being proud of his country and being an American, Kenny proudly served his country in the Army from 1962-1964 serving in the Berlin Crisis and Vietnam. He achieved the rank of Sargent 5. He then served another three years in Reserves. Kenny loved to dance since the age of three when he learned to jitterbug. He coached Little League, restored old cemeteries was a member of the American Legion, the Moose in Ft. Madison, IA, United Steel Workers, Local #3311 and Commander of the Royal Rangers for twenty-one years and loved to ride his J.D. lawnmower. He served as elder for his native brothers and sisters of Standing Bear Council. At the 2010 Winter Gathering he was honored by the Black Fox Drum when they asked Kenny to enter their circle and drum with them. Iron Wolf was very proud of his native heritage and always walked the path of peace. In 2011 Iron Wolf became a registered tribal member of Tsalagiyi Nvdagi (Cherokee of Texas). Kenny will be greatly missed by the many people that loved him. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with words of comfort by Nate Kitrell and Miles Brewer. Burial with military riteswas in the Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk, IA. Memorials may be made to Standing Bear Council, Montrose Health Care Center in Montrose, IA or the Montrose Riverfront Inc.
