Obituary

E. Katheryn Gabel, 97, of Keokuk, IA, died Friday, October 4, 2013 at the Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, IA. She was born on July 26, 1916 in Keokuk, the daughter of Louis and Ethel Testmant Moander. She graduated from Keokuk High School with the Class of 1934. On July 2, 1938 Katheryn was united in marriage to Charles R. Gabel at the First Lutheran Church in Keokuk. He preceded her in death on February 28, 1992. Katheryn and Charles moved to the family farm in rural Keokuk that was homesteaded in 1845 following their retirement. Katheryn continued to live there until one year ago when she moved back to town. Katheryn had been employed at Sheller Globe in Keokuk for twenty-six years retiring in 1978. She was a faithful member of the First Lutheran Church in Keokuk and served as a Sunday School Teacher for many years. Katheryn enjoyed Wednesday Work Days at the church where she made many, many quilts. She was a wonderful cook and everyone loved to come to her house to eat. She also enjoyed canning vegetables that her husband Charlie raised in his garden. Katheryn was an excellent seamstress and created beautiful clothing for her family. She enjoyed many years of traveling, visiting people and places and making wonderful memories. She loved animals and made room in her heart and home for a number of strays that her children brought home. She is survived by one son, Robert Gabel of Keokuk, one daughter, Bonnie Hanks and her husband Jerry of Keokuk, one granddaughter, Teresa Creach and her husband Michael of Keokuk, two great-grandchildren, Steven Michael Davis and Tobias Josiah Davis. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at the First Lutheran Church in Keokuk with Reverend Rodney Underwood officiating. Burial was in the Sunset Memorial Park in Keokuk. Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church or to the donors choice.
