Obituary

Katherine "Kay" Elizabeth Cochran Svejda, 89, of Keokuk, IA, died Sunday, September 28 at the Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, IA. She was born on March 7, 1919 in Wythe Township, Hancock County, IL, the daughter of Ernest Hanson and Mildred Miriam McKinney Cochran. On February 14, 1948, Katherine was united in marriage to George Francis Svejda at her parent's home in Hamilton, IL. He preceded her in death on March 8, 1983. She graduated from Hamilton High School. Katherine moved to Keokuk, IA during World War II and was employed at Drydens. She also sold Amway. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Hamilton. She enjoyed bingo, bowling and gardening. She loved her flowers and her birds. She was a loving mother and grandmother and was devoted in caring for her family. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy and she loved spoiling them. She is survived by two daughters, Karla Wixom (Steve) and Miriam Lorentzen (Brian), all of Keokuk, IA, three sons, Mike Svejda of Warsaw, IL, Tim Svejda of Keokuk, IA and Andy Svejda (Melisa Peterie) of Hamilton, IL thirteen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren, two sisters, Jean Cornelius of Ashland, IL and Mary Carel of Keokuk, IA, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was also preceded in death by her parents, twin great-grandsons, one brother, Hanson Cochran and one daughter-in-law, Susan Kae Svejda. Graveside services were held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 30 at the Wythe Cemetery in rural Hamilton, IL with Reverend Von Waggoner officiating. A memorial has been established.
