Karl Megchelsen, 87, of Montrose, IA, died Tuesday, June 20, 2006 at the Montrose Health Center in Montrose, IA. He was born on August 26, 1918 in Boyden, IA, the son of Reverend Karl and Glynne E. Rowan Megchelsen. On August 12, 1939, Karl was united in marriage to Olive Boyd in the Sandusky Christian Church in Sandusky, IA. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Mary Sue Chatfield and her husband Roger of Montrose, IA and Kay Dial and her husband Ralph of Keokuk, IA, six grandchildren, Joan Ealy and her husband Eric of Chagrin Falls, OH, Chris Kite and his wife Joy, Joe Kite and his wife Darcy, Carrie Fekete and her husband Brad, and Amy Benson and her husband Pete, all of Keokuk, IA, and Alan Chatfield and his wife Judy of Montrose, IA, one brother, Robert Megchelsen and his wife Lila of Washington, IA, one sister-in-law, Dorothy Megchelsen of Ainsworth, IA, sixteen great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Gerard Megchelsen and one sister, Edith Simpson. Karl graduated from the Montrose High School with the Class of 1935 and attended Monmouth College. He was a member of the Sandusky Methodist Church in Sandusky, IA. During WW II, Karl was employed at the Ordnance Plant in Middletown, IA and also farmed on the family farm in Ainsworth. After moving to Montrose, IA, he worked for the Knobbs Service Station and E.O. Beaty. Beginning in 1946, Karl was employed as a salesman for Moorman Manufacturing, which was based in Quincy, until his retirement in 1978. Following his retirement he continued farming in Montrose and planted his last crop in 2003. Karl had been very involved in the community of Montrose. He served on the Montrose Town Council, was a member of the Montrose School Board and was a volunteer Firefighter for the Montrose Fire Department. He enjoyed working in his garden, hunting and fishing and spending time with his family. But his passion was farming which he continued to do well into his 80's. In 1981, he received an Iowa Soil Conservation Award in recognition of his outstanding accomplishments in soil and water conservation and proper land use. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 27 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with his nephew Reverend James Megchelsen officiating. Burial was in the Sandusky Cemetery in Sandusky, IA. Memorials may be made to the Sandusky United Methodist Church or the Trinity United Methodist Church in Montrose.
