John O. Walter, Sr., 91, of Argyle, IA died Thursday, March 20, 2008 at the Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, IA. He was born on September 13, 1916 in Keokuk, IA, the son of Omer and Ethel Lowry Walter. On October 29, 1938, John was united in marriage to Wilma L. Stockwell in Keokuk, IA. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Shirley Happs and her husband Bob of Donnellson, IA, and Debra Juel and her husband Charlie of Montgomery, TX, one son, John Walter, Jr. and his wife Mary of Argyle, IA, seven grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson. John graduated from Argyle High School with the Class of 1933. He was a member of the Melrose United Methodist Church in rural Argyle, IA and a member of Farm Bureau. John had farmed in the Lee County area for most of his life. He enjoyed growing tomatoes and peppers in his garden. John was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and loved spending time with his family. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Monday at the Melrose United Methodist Church in rural Argyle with Reverend John Abraham and Reverend Dick Eis officiating. Burial was in the Hickory Grove Cemetery in rural Keokuk, IA. A Memorial was established for the Melrose United Methodist Church.
