Obituary

John G. Phillips, 74, of Hamilton, IL, died Sunday, April 2, 2017 at the Keokuk Area Hospital. He was born on April 4, 1942 in Chicago, IL, the son of George and Lee Posche Phillips. He graduated from Main Township High School in Chicago with the Class of 1960. He continued his education at Northern Illinois University and graduated in 1964. On November 1, 1997, John was united in marriage to Marinelle Jairl at the New Testament Christian Church in Keokuk. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Lauren Steele and husband Scott of Ft. Wayne, IN, Kristen Schultis and husband Joe of Auburn, IN, one son, Jason Phillips and wife Catrina of Parker, Colorado, two step-daughters, Lori Webermeier and husband Ken of Freeport, IL, Karena Haage of Keokuk, six grandchildren, Alex and Jacob Steele, Madison and Natalie Schultis, Jackson and Chelsie Phillips, three step-grandchildren, Shane Happs and wife Sarah, Dalton Haage and Madison Schwab, one step-great-grandson, Damien Happs, and special friends, Connie & Roger McDermott of Hamilton, Dale DeBoth of Minnesota and Laura Mesner of Keokuk. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Ginger Phillips. John had been employed as a Labor Relations Manager at American Hoist and Derrick in Saginaw, MI, Auburn Foundry in Auburn, IN, Steel Castings and Stone Container both in Keokuk. He was active in his community where he served on the Hamilton Public Library Board of Directors and also on the Hamilton Zoning Board. One of John's favorite pastimes was reading, especially action novels, and he read several books every week. John loved to travel and he and Marinelle enjoyed many years of traveling throughout the United States, including Hawaii, and also to Canada and the Panama Canal. He also enjoyed playing golf and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. John had a great personality and sense of humor and was liked by everyone who met him. According to his wishes there will be no services. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.
