John Nelson Geyer, 74 of Montrose, IA died Thursday, June 15, 2017 at his home.
He was born October 5, 1942 in Ft. Madison, IA the son of W. Fred and Oweida Marjarite Nelson Geyer. On October 9, 1977 he was united in marriage to Barbara Widdifield. She survives.
Other survivors include two sons, John F. Geyer (Jenn) of Montrose, IA and Jason R. Geyer (Crystal) of Washington, IA, one daughter, Andrea Geyer of Burlington, IA, four grandchildren, Ivy Hamilton, Emmylia Geyer, Liam Geyer and Kieran Geyer, one brother, Bill Geyer (Lynda) of Florida, one sister, Ruth Ann Orton (Tom) of Denmark, IA, two nieces, Angie Burdette and Rosanne Eubanks, two nephews, Ian Orton and Fred Geyer, several great-nieces and nephews and special friend, Tyler Sugars of Montrose, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents and several aunts and uncles.
John graduated from the Ft. Madison High School with the Class of 1960.
He was a veteran of the United States Army Reserve and proudly served his country from 1964-1973.
John first had been employed at Chevron Chemical in Ft. Madison, IA from 1967-1988. He then worked at Tri Tech Construction in Keokuk and later at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant.
He was a member of the Montrose Riverfront Inc., Donnellson American Legion and the Montrose Trinity United Methodist Church, where he had served as a board chairman and was very active in their after school program. John had been past president of both the Trades and Labor Union, Machinist Union and was also a past city council member in Montrose.
John collected model trains and had a large train memorabilia collection. He was a Boy Scout leader, assistant Scout Master and Eagle Scout mentor.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Montrose Trinity United Methodist Church with Reverend Dave Barrett officiating. Military rites will follow. Burial will be in the Montrose Cemetery at a later date.
