John D. Canida, 92, of Montrose, IA, died Monday, April 6, 2015 at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City, IA.
He was born on January 4, 1923 in Kahoka, MO, the son of John Henry and Ruby Morris Canida.
John was a veteran for the United States Navy and proudly served his country during WW II, from 1941 – 1945.
He married Juanita Tripp in June of 1947 and she preceded him in death in March of 1995. He married Sharon Burgess on May 17, 1997 in Sandusky, IA and she survives.
Other survivors include one daughter Candy Canida of Ft. Madison, IA, two sons, Bob Burgess and wife Diane and Roland Burgess and wife Wendy all of Donnellson, IA, one daughter-in-law, Vicky (Burgess) Miller and husband Mark of Powellton, IL, grandchildren, John Canida and wife Ann of Primrose, IA, Jack Canida and wife Sara of Runnells, IA and Jill Poteet and husband Nelson of Egar, AZ and seven additional grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Besides his first wife, he was also preceded in death by his parents.
After returning from the Navy, John began working as a commercial fisherman on the Mississippi and continued fishing until the day before he died. He also owned and operated the Charleston Welding Shop in Charlestown, IA and retired from welding in 1982.
John's favorite pastimes were camping and fishing. He was a great storyteller, sharing many exciting tales of his youth with his family and friends. John loved his family and his grandchildren were his pride and joy.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. At this time, friends are welcome to call on the family at their home in Montrose.
A memorial has been established in his memory.
