John Charles Burgess, 67 of Keokuk died Friday, June 15, 2018 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. He was born January 23, 1951 the son of Elmer and Mildred Thompson Burgess in Keokuk, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Bobette McNitt on April 20, 1979 in Carthage, Illinois. She survives. He is also survived by three daughters, Mildred Burgess, Jami Young and Michelle Burgess all of Keokuk, one son, John Burgess of Keokuk, nine grandchildren, Corey Burgess, Scottie Calhoun, Taylor Calhoun, Brayden Young, Jonathan Young, Jada Young, Isaiah Burgess, Sierra Burgess, and Danika Wrieden, one great grandson, Kayson Calhoun, brothers and sisters, Dan (Linda) Burgess, Rick (Sue) Burgess, Sally Bennett, Bobby (Wanda) McGee, Kevin McGee, Jesse McGee, Kim (Phil) Korschgen, Annie (Earl) Vermeesch all of Keokuk and Richard Burgess of Kahoka, along with several nieces, nephews and other adopted children. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Ellie McGee and Thelma Sherrill, two brothers, Spike Burgess and Elmer Ray Burgess, two nephews, Howard Burgess and Marty Bennett, a niece, Barbara Bennett, and mother and father in law, Doris and Bob McNitt. John was employed with Trellex Morse in Keokuk as a millman for 15 years until he retired. He enjoyed going camping and fishing. Most of all he loved spending time with his family especially spoiling his grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk. Burial was in Hickory Grove Cemetery in Keokuk. Visitation was held after 1 p.m. Wednesday with the family meeting with friends from 6 – 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family.
