View Video Tribute John "Briar" Eugene Horner, 16, of Montrose, IA died Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at the Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, IA. He was born on November 23, 1993 in Keokuk, IA the son of John and Tina Hartwig Horner. Briar was a Junior at Central Lee High School. He worked for Krogmeier Dairy in Franklin, IA as a farmhand. He was a member of the FFA, was on the Young Guns Trap Shooting League in Montrose, IA, and participated in the Demo Derby. He was an outstanding athlete and was involved in several sports. He started wrestling as a young child and played basketball, football and baseball throughout Junior High and was participating in football in High School. Briar also enjoyed coon, deer and turkey hunting. He was an all around sportsman and enjoyed life. His goal was to become a farmer. He is survived by his mother, Tina Horner and her friend Collin Cook of Carthage, IL, his father John Horner and his fiancé Tricia Snedegar of Montrose, IA, two brothers, Zachary Horner of Keokuk, IA, and Chance Horner and his friend Ashley Wells of Montrose, IA, one sister, Lindsay Horner and her friend Chad Wells of Montrose, IA, Will Gragg who was Briar's "mini me", one special brother, Joe Franklin and his wife Shelly of Keokuk, IA, Brook Cook and Brylee Cook both of Carthage, IL, grandparents, Larry and Bonnie Horner of Montrose, IA, grandmother Norma Hartwig of Wayland, MO, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by one grandfather, Richard Hartwig, great grandparents, Ken and Almeda Horner and Walt and Margaret Self. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, August 13th 2010 at the New Testament Christian Church in Keokuk, IA with Brother Bill Hauser, Doug Horner, and Tony Nye officiating. Burial was in the Oakland-Sand Cemetery in Vincennes, IA. A memorial has been established for a scholarship fund in Briar's name for the Central Lee FFA.
