Obituary

John Junior Bone Jaw Varner, 80 of Keokuk died Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, IA. He was born May 20, 1933 in Keokuk the son of William and Myrtle Stephenson Varner. He was married to Margaret Washburne. She preceded him in death. John had been employed at Electro Metals/Ferro Sil in Keokuk as a crane operator for forty-six years. He was a member of the McDonald Coffee Club and going there frequently to visit with friends. John was a collector of old cars and model cars. His all time favorite car was a Mustang. He enjoyed reading the newspaper and watching boxing and baseball on television. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan. John liked to keep fit and walked and exercised regularly. He was a very giving person and was always willing to do things for other people. John was a loving father, grandfather and brother and loved to spend time with his family. He is survived by two daughters, Vickey Swainey and her husband Gary of Keokuk and Vanessa Englebrecht and her husband Edward of Keokuk, two step-sons, Howard Mortimer of TX and David Washburne and his wife Sherry of Keokuk, one step- daughter, Mary Randsdell and her husband Marvin of Keokuk, five grandchildren, Billy Gilbert, Deaven Swainey, Alexis (Michael) Clark, Kacey Swainey and Elizabeth Englebrecht, five great-grandchildren, several step-grandchildren, numerous step-great-grandchildren and step- great-great-grandchildren, two sisters, Helen Thorn of Keokuk and Norma Varner of Keokuk, one brother, Dick Varner of Keokuk, numerous nieces and nephews including special niece Jan Conover of Keokuk and longtime best friend, Frank Mueller of Keokuk and many other friends and family. He was preceded in death by his parents, one step-son, Jerry Washburne, two brothers, three sisters and one great-grandson, Austen Appel. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 19th, 2014at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk with Reverend David Turner officiating. Burial was in the Hickory Grove Cemetery in Keokuk. Memorials may be made to the Hickory Grove Cemetery.
