View Video Tribute Joan Louise Perry Schleier, 58, of Keokuk, IA, died Tuesday, January 23, 2007 at the Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, IA. She was born on April 29, 1948 in Cedar Rapids, IA, the daughter of Vernon George and Catherine Aukerman Perry. On October 21, 1972, Joan was united in marriage to Dr. Gerald H. Schleier in Cedar Rapids, IA. He survives. She is also survived by two daughters, Sarah L. Kraus and her husband Eric of Carver, MN and Emily A. Schleier of Keokuk, IA, one son, Matthew G. Schleier of Des Moines, IA, three grandchildren, Madelyn, Grogan and Evelyn Kraus, one brother, Thomas Perry and Pippa Currie-Wood of Portland, Oregon, one sister, Susan Kling and her husband Robert of Indianola, IA, and nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents. Joan graduated from Regis High School in Cedar Rapids, IA with the Class of 1966. She attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA and received her degree in Art Education in 1971. She first taught at Lisbon High School in Lisbon, IA. After moving to Keokuk, she was the Office Manager at her husband's Dental Office and also did substitute teaching. Most recently she had been employed as the Art Teacher at George Washington Elementary School. She was a member of the All Saints Catholic Church and had taught Religious Education Classes at the church. Joan had served on the Keokuk Catholic School Board, on the Keokuk Community School Board and on the Benevolent Union Board. She was active in the Keokuk Fine Arts Council and past President of PEO Chapter LY. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, the American Association of University Women, Mothers Study Group, St. Vincent's PTO, Middle School PTA, the University of Iowa Alumni Association and the Chicago Art Institute. Joan had a passion for education and was very proud that all five members of her family had graduated from the University of Iowa. She had a great appreciation of the Fine Arts, loved to play tennis and bridge, enjoyed walking and skiing and was an avid reader. Joan was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and her family was her life's joy. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m., Friday, January 26 at the All Saints Catholic Church in Keokuk, IA with Father Paul Connolly officiating. Burial was in the Keokuk National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.
