Obituary

Joan R. Briley, 78, of Keokuk, IA, died Saturday, November 19, 2016 at Keokuk Area Hospital. She was born on November 21, 1937 in Charleston Township, Iowa, the daughter of Mirl and Ruby A. Benge Spurgeon. On October 16, 1981 she was united in marriage to William L. Briley in Memphis, MO. He survives. Other survivors include two sons, David Reece Hornung and wife Rebecca Egley of Keokuk and Billy Gene Reece, Jr. of Ft. Madison, IA, three step daughters, Dixie Kirchner and husband Clinton of Kahoka, Amy Wilkerson and husband Eric of Tampa, FL, and Barbara Calloway and husband Robert of Williamsburg, VA, three step-sons, Doug Reece and wife Barb of Kahoka, Brad Briley and wife Sheri of Montrose and Bill A. Briley of Keokuk, two grandchildren, Jess Raleigh and husband James of Quincy, IL and Dillon Reece of Des Moines, IA, two great-grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, sixteen step-great-grandchildren, one brother, Reverend M.E. Spurgeon and wife Pearl of Arnold, MO, one sister, Sue Jobe and husband Roger of Warsaw, IL, three sisters-in-law, Liz Newberry and husband Rodger ,Wanda Baugher, Dorothy Burrell and husband, Rich all of Keokuk, one brother-in-law, Ned Rhea and wife Patti of Keokuk, several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Kirk Lynn Reece, one daughter-in-law, Toni Martinez and two brothers-in-law, John Briley and Earl Baugher. Joan had worked at the Knotty Pine restaurant and the Keokuk Motor Lodge, both in Keokuk, for several years. She then became the manager of the Holiday Terrace Apartment in Keokuk and worked there for ten years. She was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Keokuk. Joan loved to bowl and had been on bowling leagues that traveled all over the United States for tournament play. She was the recipient of many trophies and ribbons over the years. She also enjoyed going to the casino and was often a lucky winner. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m., Wednesday. November 23, 2016 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk with Pastor Jack Klose officiating. Memorials may be made to the family.
