IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James
Wells
January 14, 1947 – July 28, 2025
James "Jim" Wells passed away at his home in Keokuk on July 28, 2025 at the age of 78. Jim was born in Keokuk on January 14, 1947 he and was a lifelong resident. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Charles Wells and Marie Louise Wells.
Jim was employed as a realtor for many years, during which time he received Keokuk's "Realtor of the Year" award. He also worked as an insurance agent for the Jelly Wells Agency. His occupations were such a small part of the man Jim was. His involvement in the Keokuk community and pride in its history and character was significant. Jim was a member of the Keokuk Historical Society for many years before it became the Keokuk History Center, his knowledge of Keokuk history was unbeatable as was his love for the community.
Jim was one of the founders of the "Rolling on the River" Blues festival along the Mississippi River. His membership on the Keokuk Art Center Board and served as its vice-president extended back more than forty-five years and he served as its representative to the Keokuk Fine Arts Council. Jim was a member of the Lee County Democratic Central Committee for over thirty years and often served as caucus chair. He received the Lee County Democratic Party's Steve Ireland Award in 2015 for his volunteer activities.
Those who knew Jim well, knew that he took pride in his houseplants, read voraciously, gifted his friends with packets of news articles and political cartoons weekly, was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, and watched more movies than anyone else in the area. Jim could still be found watching barges pass through the lock, driving the streets of Keokuk checking on historic homes, and buying Stan's pastries. He was Keokuk to his core. Jim will be missed by many.
A gathering of remembrance celebrating the life of Jim was held Monday, August 18, 2025 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk from 5 – 7 p.m.
