James "Russel" Miller, 91, of Keokuk, IA, died Monday, May 14, 2007 at River Hills Village in Keokuk, IA. He was born on August 23, 1915 in Big Neck, IL, the son of James and Florence Shaw Miller. On April 22, 1936, Russel was united in marriage to Opal L. Davis. She preceded him in death on September 16, 2004. Russel had been a lifelong farmer in the Keokuk, IA area. While farming, he had also been employed at Midwest Carbide and Steel Castings in Keokuk, IA. He retired in 1978. Following his retirement he managed the Iowa District Church of the Nazarene Campground in West Des Moines, IA, for eleven years. He then returned to Keokuk and went back to his love of farming, working at the Bob & Henry Leu farm. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Keokuk, IA. Russel enjoyed his work and would rather be working than doing anything else. He loved his family and was devoted to caring for them. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He is survived by five sons, Gerald Miller and his wife Bonnie of Olathe, KS, Leonard Miller and his wife Barbara of El Dorado Springs, MO, Edward Miller and his wife Rose of Morrisville, NC, Paul Miller and his wife Kay of Des Moines, IA and Dennis Miller and his wife Teresa of Olathe, KS, seventeen grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, one step-great-grandchild, four great-great-grandchildren, one brother, Bob Miller and his wife Sis of Keokuk, IA, three sisters, Opal Miller and her husband Cliff of Toledo, WA, Ethel Turtle of Chehalis, WA and Doris Bowden of Quincy, IL, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Dale Miller and one sister, Ruby Varner. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Thursday at the Church of the Nazarene in Keokuk, IA with Pastor Paul Miller and Pastor Dana Jurgens officiating. Burial was in the Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton, IL. Memorials may be made to the Church of the Nazarene in Keokuk, IA.
