James Robert McVeigh, 87, of Montrose, IA, died Saturday, January 2, 2010 at his home. He was born on June 10, 1922 in Hamilton, IL the son of Leo and Helen Greenslaugh McVeigh. On August 31, 1941, Jim was united in marriage to Mildred Davis at the Methodist Church parsonage in Montrose, IA. She survives. Other survivors include three daughters, Ardath Tweedy and her husband Karl of Keokuk, Elizabeth Barker and her husband Mike of Keokuk, and Lois Easton and her husband Larry of Kansas City, KS, two sons, Gregory McVeigh and his wife Barbara of Kahoka, MO and David McVeigh and his wife Karen of Montrose, IA, ten grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, twenty six great-grandchildren, two sisters, Joann Rooney of Cedar Rapids, IA and Dorothy Junkins of Chino Valley, AZ and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Elice Stockwell and one brother, Dick McVeigh. Mr. McVeigh graduated from the Montrose high School with the Class of 1941. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in the medical corp during WW II. He began working for Santa Fe Railroad in 1941 in Ft. Madison, IA. In 1968 he took the position of material supervisor in the Argentine office for Santa Fe and relocated to Kansas City, KS. He retired from Santa Fe in 1983. In 2004 he moved back to his childhood home in rural Keokuk, IA. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Montrose. While living in Kansas City, Jim was very active in his church there and volunteered in the soup kitchen and food pantry. Mr. McVeigh served as a volunteer fireman for the Montrose Fire Department for twenty seven years. He enjoyed working in his garden, woodworking, square dancing and bowling. Jim and Mildred enjoyed traveling and spending their winters in Mission TX. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, January 5 at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Reverend Goldie Laymon officiating. Burial with military rites was in the Montrose Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church in Montrose.
