James "Jim" Lewis Smith, 71, of Kahoka, passed away Friday, September 5, 2025, at the University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia.
He was born on June 9, 1954, in Quincy, IL, the son of Herbert Roechelle and Elizabeth Marsae Messer Smith.
Jim proudly enlisted in the United States Army, where he served his country with honor until his honorable discharge.
On April 9, 1976, Jim was united in marriage to the love of his life, Sharon Starr, in Kahoka. They shared forty years together before her passing on February 6, 2016.
He was employed at Steel Castings in Keokuk for thirty-two years until his retirement.
Jim enjoyed restoring old cars, traveling, and especially trips to the Ozarks. He loved camping and fishing and could often be found relaxing to his favorite country music.
He is survived by his children, Terry Briggs (Deborah) of Wayland, Jason Smith of Kahoka, and Shelly Thurman of Kahoka; ten grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Mike Smith of Des Moines, IA, and Jeff Smith (Debra) of Kahoka; two half-sisters, Linda Harvey of Cedar Rapids and Carol Ownvey of Marion; along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
In addition to his wife, Jim was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Roy "Pappy" Haskins; sister, Patricia Ludwick; brother, Kevin Ray Smith; son-in-law, Steve Thurman; great-grandson, Da'Markiss Steven Wayne Wadena; three half-sisters, Betty McCormick, Sandy Zepeda, and Kay Heindrich; two half-brothers, James "Kenneth Ford" McClain and Dan Smith; and stepbrother, Darrell Haskins.
A funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at the Vigen Memorial Home in Kahoka with Pastor Ray Gilbert officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Kahoka Cemetery.
Visitation was held on Friday, where the family will meet with friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
